Stanley promoted but Macc must wait

- NON-LEAGUE ROUND-UP By SHELDAN KEAY @MENSports

ACCRINGTON Stanley have capped off a historic season after they clinched promotion to League One following their 2-0 victory over Yeovil Town.

Two goals from Billy Kee in the first-half secured the win for Stanley, and ensured they would finish in the League Two automatic promotion places.

It resulted in a fantastic evening for the Accrington supporters at the Wham Stadium, who were out in force to see their side triumph.

The promotion to League One means that the Reds will be playing in the third tier of English football for the first time in their history.

It has been a fantastic campaign for John Coleman’s men, with the team winning 27 of their 42 games so far despite having one of the smallest budgets in the division.

There were a number of key wins for Stanley throughout the campaign, including coming from behind to win against Port Vale and Stevenage, along with important away victories at Luton Town and Grimsby.

The next goal for Accrington will be to finish the season as league champions, with the team having to fight off competition from secondplaced Luton.

Meanwhile, MACCLESFIELD TOWN will have to wait a bit longer to confirm their promotion back to the Football League, as second placed Tranmere Rovers successfully defeated Dover 1-0 away from home, thanks to a firsthalf goal from Andy Cook.
