Heaven help us, Jeremy...

THE list of great thespians from our region is a credit to the depth and breadth of Northern talent (M.E.N, Monday, April 16.)

In particular is the versatility of Albert Finney who played an aggressive working class rebel in Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, as well as the best portrayal by far of Sir Winston Churchill in A Gathering Storm, which was about the declaration of war with Germany in 1939.

Because of the debacle of lives lost in the First World War, Churchill faced much resistance against the need to stand up to Germany’s war aims.

Yet no one was more surprised than Adolf Hitler by how easily his armed forces rampaged across Europe – and if warnings from Churchill had been acted on, many lives would have been saved.

With the Syria issue, Corbyn simply illustrates hypocrisy by sanctimonious self-righteous indignation towards reducing Assad’s immediate power to inflict further inhuman suffering on his own people, with internationally outlawed chemical weapons.

But then throughout his political life, Mr Corbyn has defied responsible authority, including his own Labour party.

He may be riding high on a wave of understandable resentment and anger, but heaven help the defence of our country if he ever gains power. Bill Newham, Worsley
