De Gea wants bright end to season with FA Cup win

- By RICHARD FAY

UNITED keeper David de Gea knows victory in the FA Cup is crucial if they are to save their season after missing out on their ‘big trophy targets’.

Jose Mourinho’s side crashed out of the Champions League in the round of 16 and failed to lift the Premier League title as City clinched the title last weekend.

Despite domestic disappointment, the United shot-stopper has been recognised for his superb performances this campaign after being named in the PFA’s team of the year. And while the Spanish international is delighted with his own performances, he admits trophies and not personal awards are what really count. Speaking after being named in the team of the year for the fifth time in six seasons, De Gea insisted his desire was to be part of an FA Cup winning squad this season.

“I’m very, very proud to be nominated once again and I guess it’s a result of me having a good year on a personal note,” De Gea told manutd.com . “It makes you even more proud, really, when you know your fellow professional players have nominated you. It’s really a source of satisfaction for me.

“I’m pleased with how my own performances have gone; it’s just a pity this season we have not won one of our big targets trophy-wise.

“We’ve still got the FA Cup in front of us and must make sure we win a trophy and not just a personal accolade.”
