OUR SKYSCRAPER CITY:

MANCHESTER’S skyline is changing dramatically - as this fascinating graphic shows.
Produced by estate agents Savills it highlights how the city centre is growing upwards at a dizzying pace.
And that development is only set to accelerate in the next few years.
By contrasting existing buildings such as the town hall and Beetham Tower (coloured in yellow), alongside projects under construction (red) and those which have been granted planning permission (blue), it is a remarkable snapshot of how Manchester is expanding at a rate not seen since the Industrial Revolution.
And it is been driven by the explosion in the city centre property market, with all the developments included here, made up largely of luxury flats.
For decades Manchester Town Hall, 85m at its highest point, was the city’s tallest building.
But it is mere titch compared to the skyscrapers on the cards.
Even the iconic CIS Tower, which at 115m was briefly the UK’s tallest building when it was opened in 1962, will be dwarfed by what is to come over the next few years.
Peter Whittingham, from Savills’ Manchester planning team said: “Manchester is undergoing a transformation.
“The city is experiencing a large number of developments for tall buildings.
“Although they are located in various parts of the city, some of the tallest buildings can be seen from a variety of locations, giving the appearance of definitive city core from any one of a number of vantage points.
“The graphic illustrates these changes and demonstrate the significance of the transformation that the city is undergoing.
“It is a powerful graphic as it gives Manchester the look of many other international cities which have iconic skylines.”
Below we take a look at the big developments on the horizon across the city centre...
