Steve’s team ready for charity run challenge
THE friends and colleagues of a prestigious Manchester businessman with terminal cancer will take on the Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run in his honour.
Steve Burne, managing director of AEW Architects, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer last year at the age of 46.
He has had radiotherapy and chemotherapy and has suffered five cardiac arrests.
Steve was also in a coma and was left blind in one eye. Steve, who is also one of the vice presidents of the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, is still undergoing treatment to give him as much time as possible with his family. He said he is committed to helping others and is focusing his efforts on fundraising for more long-stay rooms at Ronald McDonald House, which provides accommodation for the families of sick children at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. These new rooms will be named after Steve, who has helped raise more than £4m over the past 14 years as chairman of their charity board. In a bid to help Steve in his mission, his friends and colleagues at the chamber are taking on a challenge to cycle, run and walk the equivalent total of going round the world.
To help clock up the miles, a team of 15 from the chamber have entered the Great Manchester Run Business Challenge at the halfmarathon and 10k event on Sunday, May 20.
Steve said: “I’m impressed that so many of the chamber team are going to lace up their trainers and run for the campaign at the Great Manchester Run.
“Every pound counts and we have been overwhelmed by the support to date.”
