Sickness ruled Bailly out of Wembley

- By SAMUEL LUCKHURST

ERIC Bailly was fit for United’s FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham, but suffered from illness in the week leading up to the tie and was not risked by Jose Mourinho.

The defender has started one of the Reds’ last five matches and was not named in the matchday squads against West Brom and Tottenham, although Mourinho suggested Bailly was rested for the former fixture.

The M.E.N. understands Bailly, 24, was vomiting shortly before United’s defeat to West Brom but felt well enough to travel to Bournemouth, where he was named on the bench, but was not 100 per cent fit.

Bailly trained in London at Fulham’s Craven Cottage before the semi-final, but Mourinho decided not to risk him after Phil Jones returned impressively in the win at the Vitality Stadium alongside Chris Smalling.

The England duo neutered Harry Kane in the 2-1 win over Spurs and Victor Lindelof was named on the United bench ahead of Bailly.

Romelu Lukaku revealed he vomited after the derby win at City on April 7 and the Belgian started the Bournemouth game on the bench but emerged to score his 27th of the campaign.

Sergio Romero remains the only United player currently sidelined through injury.

Bailly has missed 26 of United’s 51 matches this season through injuries and ailments and was also unavailable for their European Super Cup and Champions League opener due to suspension.
