Woman punched at train station
A WOMAN was punched in the face and knocked out after she challenged a gang of 15 unruly youths at a railway station.
Police said the group were ‘causing a disturbance’ when the passenger, in her 30s, intervened.
She was alone at the time at Mossley railway station in Tameside and is understood to have been waiting for a train. British Transport Police (BTP) said she was punched once in the face and fell unconscious.
A spokesman said the woman wasn’t seriously injured, despite being knocked out.
She was treated at the scene by paramedics and later taken to hospital for checks. An investigation is now underway.
BTP officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward. It’s understood police were initially contacted as the gang were throwing stones on to the railway tracks near to the station.
Details of the attack were revealed in a tweet posted by BTP.
The incident happened at around 8.40pm on Saturday night.
BTP said: “Officers were called to Mossley station following a report of 15 youths causing a disturbance.
“A lone female passenger challenged this group and as a result was punched to the face, knocking her unconscious. We have got enquiries ongoing to determine offenders.
“We were called at 8.40pm to Mossley station after reports of a group of youths causing a disturbance. A woman aged in her thirties was assaulted during this disturbance.
“Her injuries are not believed to be serious at this time. Officers spoke with a number of youths at the scene.”
