A GANG of yobs were reportedly seen launching fireworks at horses in a field.

Police confirmed they were looking into the incident, near Ainsworth Lodges in Bury.

Resident Rachel Chapman said she was walking nearby when she saw a group of teenage boys scrambling through a fence and across the field.

At first she thought they running away from the horses, but she then heard a loud bang and saw smoke rising. After realising a firework had been set off, Rachel sprinted towards the boys who then ran away.

She said: “I thought they were just scared of the horses when they were running away.

“One stopped and the others were shouting things, but we couldn’t hear clearly.

“I was annoyed they were crossing private land so I took some photos. I didn’t realise what he was doing until the loud bang and smoke.

“We started to run towards the field as I was worried for the horses. We knew we couldn’t catch the boys as they ran away over the hill.

“The horses were initially distressed and galloped across the field – they didn’t bolt through the fence.

“It was either a large firework or what we know as a ‘flash-bang.’ It was loud and there was a lot of smoke.”

Rachel said that the majority of the group ran off in the direction of Walshaw during the incident at 9pm on Monday.

A police spokesman said: “We were called just before 11pm on May 7 to reports that a large group of youths had been throwing fireworks just off Cockey Moor Road in Bury.

“Officers are looking into the incident and there are no further details at this time.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting log number 2818 of May 7.
