Word on street is countdown to Manchester Day has begun

WORKSHOP OPENS TO CREATE PARADE FLOATS

- By ALICE IRVING

THE countdown has begun for the region’s favourite day out as the Manchester Day workshop opens for business.

This year’s event on Sunday, June 17 will be asking what’s the ‘word on the street’ – celebrating the best of Manchester’s people, cultures and communities.

Hundreds of artists, producers and the ever-important army of volunteers will transform the Upper Campfield Market on Liverpool Road into the UK’s most productive creative workshop crafting the incredible artworks, costumes, props and floats that will parade through the city streets next month.

Run by outdoor arts organisation Walk the Plank, the workshop will welcome some of the best artists from across the north west ready to begin the mammoth task of bringing Manchester Day to life.

Nearly 2,000 people from community groups around the city will come together in a parade full of celebration for the city we live in.

The parade will also spill over into the city centre squares for a full afternoon of entertainment, food and drink – all of which will be revealed in the coming weeks.

There is still time to be part of the show, either by helping to create the parade or by volunteering to help on the day.

Coun Pat Karney, chair of Manchester Day, said: “The most important, the most exciting, the most creative day in Manchester’s incredible event calendar is almost up on us.

“The hard work starts here to create the literally thousands of pieces that bring Manchester Day to life every year.

“Put the date in your diary now. Manchester Day is one of those events you just can’t afford to miss. Every year we have generations of families come together to celebrate the city, and this year will be no different. The countdown has begun.”

Manchester Day will take place on from midday until 6pm. The parade begins from Liverpool Road at 1pm.

Manchester Day is created by Manchester People, commissioned by the council and produced by Walk the Plank.
