THE family of a man stabbed to death during a fight in Rochdale say he was an innocent bystander trying to keep the peace.

The victim, named locally as Matty Shaw, was discovered by police suffering with stab wounds on Melrose, in Lower Falinge, on Wednesday night.

Matty, 26, was taken to hospital where he died a short time later.

Matty’s family said they have been told he had tried to intervene in a fight when he was stabbed. A relative said Matty spent a lot of time at the sports court near the scene of the attack.

Greater Manchester Police have launched an investigation and a spokeswoman said officers have not yet formally identified the victim.

Two teenagers, aged 18 and 19, have been arrested on suspicion of murder. They remained in custody for questioning.

Yesterday morning police tape surrounded a block of flats and the street where the stabbing took place.

Forensic officers could be seen combing the area for clues, with a crime scene also set up inside the block of flats.

Floral tributes were left outside the flats by family and friends.

Neighbours also told of their shock and said there is not usually trouble in the area.

Friends paid tribute to Matty on social media, describing him as a ‘hardworking’ and ‘nice lad’ who was taken ‘too soon.’

Dani Louise shared a photo of Matty on Facebook, writing: “Known you all my life, just can’t believe what I’m hearing, was such a lovely and caring lad, RIP Matty will always be in my thoughts.”

Kerry Hall wrote: “Can’t believe it, another young lad taken far too soon, it’s so sad. RIP Matty you’ll be missed.”

Celsey Knight said: “RIP Matty Shaw you will be sadly missed mate, hope your dancing with your mummy in the skies pal spread your wings now you’re in a better place.”

Bradley Miller added: “RIP Matty. May Peace be with you in heaven. I’ll never forget you, forever in my heart.”

GMP are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with further information to get in touch.

Det Insp John Mulvihill, of GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “This is a tragic set of circumstances which has resulted in a young man losing his life and my thoughts are with his family at this extremely difficult time.

“We currently have two men in custody on suspicion of murder and they will be questioned by detectives later today as we try to establish exactly what has happened.

“In the meantime, I would ask that anybody with information about this incident, no matter how big or small you think that may be, to please contact the police.”

Anybody with information can contact police on 0161 856 6777, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
