TWO police officers had urine thrown over them by a man they were trying to question.

The 39-year-old has been arrested on Wednesday night on suspicion of criminal damage in Chinatown, in the city centre.

Witnesses reported a man damaging a phone box in the area.

The following morning two Greater Manchester Police officers attempted to bring the suspect out of the cell to question him.

But he refused to comply so the officers offered him the chance to be interviewed through the hatch of his prison cell.

The suspect covered the hatch up with a blanket and scooped up toilet water with his hand.

He then chucked it at the two officers through the hatch.

The two officers were taken out of uniform for the rest of the day and have been unable to be out on the streets.

Sgt Siobhan Emmett-Jones, of the city centre team, said the two officers will receive medical advice about Hepatitis A vaccination following the incident.

She said it may mean the officers will have to keep contact away from their young children when they return home. A tweet from the GMP city centre account said: “Two of my officers had urine thrown over them in custody this morning by a male detained for criminal damage. “Taking them away from their communities for the rest of the day. I’m too angry to pun about it.” Sgt Emmett-Jones added: “They are very shocked. We will make sure they are given the appropriate advice.” “They are out of uniform but working still putting a file together. They are now off the streets because of that incident.”
