THE incredible work of schools in communities across the region will be celebrated at the Greater Manchester Schools Awards.

This week we are highlighting four of the exciting awards categories your school could win. The awards, now in their fourth year, are FREE to enter and open to all primary, secondary and independent schools across the region’s 10 boroughs.

The Healthy Living Award is for an individual, class or whole school who make it a priority to lead a healthy lifestyle. This could be by encouraging exercise, or teaching pupils about eating healthy foods.

Last year it was won by the emotional wellbeing and mental health team at Whalley Range 11-18 High School.

The School in the Community Award is for a class, year group or whole school who play an active role in their local community.

Bolton School scooped the equivalent award in 2017. Sophie Entwistle, head of community action at the school, said: “It was a real treat to be invited to The Greater Manchester Schools Awards, we were made to feel very special at the glittering event. There was a real buzz in the room from the finalists and it was an excellent chance to network.”

In the School Communication Award we are looking for a school with exceptional internal and external communication. This could be through a VLE portal, blog, social media, website or school newspaper. The school should demonstrate fun and interesting communication engaging with teachers, pupils, parents, and the wider community.

Russell Scott Primary School’s engaging website won over our judges last year.

We are also on the hunt for entrants for the Class/Team of the Year award. Perhaps your school have an outstanding class or team where pupils and teachers have worked together to really stand out. It could be a sports team that has trained hard, or an orchestra, choir or drama group who have worked together on a performance.

The Manchester College will once again sponsor the awards.

Principal Lisa O’Loughlin said: “As one of the largest Further Education colleges in the UK, The Manchester College is committed to sharing good practice and making a positive impact in our communities. We nurture close relationships with schools across the region and are dedicated to improving life chances for all.”
