Fury’s father fires warning about his son

PETER Fury has warned the heavyweight division that his son Hughie Fury is developing the power to complement his technical skills.

Fury was controversially denied a world title by a majority decision defeat to Joseph Parker in September 2017 and will now look to bounce back when he challenges Sam Sexton for the British crown in Bolton tomorrow.

Father and trainer Peter Fury is encouraged by the increasing weight in the punches thrown by his son, who is still just 23.

“It’s fair to say his power has grown. He’s holding a lot more in his hands these days.

“It’ll be nice to see some improvements when he gets in there on Saturday,” said Peter.

“If these fights become available, we’ll always take them. Safe to say, he’d fight for a world title tomorrow if it was available.

“This is not about business or blagging people to get your face on in the internet. It’s about winning and proving you’re the best. If Hughie can take meaningful fights, that’s all we want.

“God willing we get through this fight and he’s going to have three this year. He’ll be in a world level fight by the end of the year and hopefully we’ll force our way back to a mandatory position.”

Fury is the favourite with the bookmakers in this weekend’s fight, despite Sexton being the reigning champion.

Sexton hopes to progress further than the British title, and potentially challenge for world honours before his career is over.

“A world title chance is every boxer’s dream, that’s what we all aim for in this sport and that’s what I’m going for,” said Sexton.

“It’s at the top of my agenda and what’s motivating me to beat Fury in his backyard on Saturday.

“I’ve been in this business for a long time and I know that this is now the moment for me, I need that win over Fury more than anything and then I’m in strong position to press my case.

“I’ll be disappointed if I go my whole career without challenging for a world title, so I have to keep winning and crucially retain my title against Fury, which will be a hard and tough fight.”
