KEEPER EDS FOR LONG CITY STAY

- By STUART BRENNAN

EDERSON has been rewarded for his brilliant debut season with a record-breaking new contract.

The City goalkeeper has been given a two-year extension – and substantial pay rise – aimed at keeping him at the club until 2025.

And that deal, which amounts to seven years, is the longest any City player has ever been given, a sure sign of the faith the Blues have in him as a bedrock of this young team.

It is also a sign that Ederson has settled quickly in Manchester, committing himself to the Blues until beyond his 31st birthday.

The 24-year-old penned a six-year deal when he joined the club for £35m last summer, itself a world record fee for a keeper.

But he has been an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s thrilling style of playing from the back, as well as a good shot-stopper, and City wanted to wrap him up for the long term.

Replacing Claudio Bravo, the Brazil international has started all but one league game this season and is expected to go to the World Cup with his country.

Ederson said: “I’m delighted to sign my new contract. It means that the club is happy with my work, they trust me, and I hope to meet their expectations on the pitch and bring a lot of joy to the fans. “I want to win everything we can! All of the competitions, but for me the Champions League is without a doubt a very special competition for us, and it is my dream to win it in Manchester City’s shirt!”

Txiki Begiristain, City director of football, said: “Ederson has shown in his first season at the club that he has all the attributes needed to become one of the best goalkeepers in the world.”
