/Hire a car for less than a tenner

-

THESE are ten places in Europe where families can hire a car during the school holidays for under a tenner a day.

Travel comparison website, TravelSupermarket is encouraging families to book in advance instead of hiring a car at the airport, to save themselves a huge amount of cash.

It has rounded up some of the best deals in Europe, with Alicante at the top of the list of bargains.

The best deal, for a compact car, such as a Seat Leon, Ford Focus or Opel Astra, collected on Saturday, May 26 and dropped off on Saturday, June 2, was £13.17 when booked in advance on the website - which works out at £1.65 a day.

In comparison, a similar deal at the airport would cost 13 times the price at £197.63.

A Malaga deal for the same car and time frame would be £19.96, or £2.50 per day, followed by Barcelona, where it would cost £29.99 or £3.75.

Rounding out the rest of the top ten, with prices all under £10 a day were Faro, Tenerife, Lisbon, Lanzarote, Ibiza, Rhodes and Athens.

In every instance the comparison site’s research found a significantly cheaper price by booking ahead online instead of when already at the airport.

Emma Grimster, spokesperson at TravelSupermarket said; “Car hire prices this half term are incredibly competitive, particularly in Spain and its islands, Portugal and Greece. Demand is low as the main summer holiday begins and most other areas of Europe do not have school holidays at the same time this month. With prices starting from as little as £1.65 per day, the option of hiring a car and getting that added bit of freedom and flexibility really is excellent value for money.

“Whenever you are going on holiday, it always makes sense to book your car hire as soon as you can to secure availability on the car type you want and to get a great online price. If you’re going away this half term, or later in the summer and haven’t yet booked car hire, it is worth doing so ASAP as prices rarely go down online closer to the date, particularly in the peak summer season.”
