Police WERE pursuing beer-garden crash car

- By ALEXANDRA RUCKI

A CAR which ploughed through a fence into a pub’s beer garden WAS being pursued by police.

The silver Audi ended up just yards away from two young children in a play area after it smashed through the fence at The Windmill, in Failsworth, Oldham.

Armed police were on scene on Lord Lane alongside police dog units moments after the crash on May 10.

Police have now confirmed the vehicle was being pursued by police when it smashed into the fence.

Officers began pursuing the Audi at 3.40pm as they thought it had been involved in an earlier robbery in the same area. The driver and a passenger inside the vehicle fled from the scene after it slammed into the fence.

A 25-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of robbery, dangerous driving and possession with intent to supply cannabis.

He was taken to hospital for treatment.

There were no reports of any injuries and luckily no other pub customers were sat in the beer garden at the time.

Witnesses said they saw the Audi swerve off the road and smash through panels of the beer garden’s fencing, directly next to the pub building.

It happened as children left the nearby St Mary’s RC Primary School for the day.

Greater Manchester Police are appealing for anybody with further information or any witnesses to get in touch.

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 quoting incident number 1310 of 10/05/18.
