MATIC SAYS UNITED MUST BUY TO KEEP UP WITH CITY

- By CIARAN KELLY

NEMANJA Matic has urged United to buy players with ‘some experience’ in a bid to challenge City for the title.

Jose Mourinho’s side have finished the season trophyless after their FA Cup final defeat to Chelsea on Saturday.

United were knocked out of the Champions League in the last 16 by Sevilla and suffered a shock defeat to Bristol City in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals earlier in the season.

The Reds did improve their league position, though, jumping from sixth place to second in a year, but they still finished a whopping 19 points behind rivals City.

United have been linked with Toby Alderweireld, Alex Sandro, Fred and Willian in recent weeks.

And, Matic, a two-time title winner, believes the club needs to recruit a particular profile of player this summer.

“I think we need some players with some experience with some more qualities to add to our team,” he said.

“After that, we can fight for the title and the Champions League also.”

And Matic has defended team-mate Phil Jones, who gave away the decisive penalty at Wembley on Saturday.

“This is football. Everyone can make a mistake,” he said. “He worked for sure to do the best for the team - he always fights for the team.

“I can’t blame him because he always gives 100 per cent. He needs to forget and be focused on the next challenge.”
