/Hits and myths of travel bargains

SOME travel tips will help you save money when booking flights - but others are sadly myths.

While it’s no longer true that booking flights on a Tuesday is cheaper, it is true that you can save money by taking indirect flights. Now travel experts at digital banking app Revolut have separated fact from fiction to help travellers save money on summer flights. Tips that are true include: Flying to and from smaller airports is cheaper, particularly as they are often home to budget airlines

Clearing browser cache and cookies saves money. Airlines and booking sites can record browser history with cookies, meaning they can compare their price with what you have viewed previously and bump up the price as they see fit.

Booking flights in foreign currency can save you money. For example, you can save around £15 on a journey between London and New York, if you pay using Danish Krone.

Flying indirect can knock a lot off your flight cost. Stop overs can knock up to 40 per cent of the price of a flight.

The travel tips that are myths, however, include:

Tuesday is the cheapest day to book. This used to be true back in the day, as airlines would release new fares to travel agents every Tuesday, but now with the net, new deals and sales are released every single day.

Booking last minute isn’t always cheaper. It is actually a huge gamble as you can end up paying up to 30 per cent more than if you book your flight seven to 12 weeks in advance.

Booking a return flight with the same airline isn’t cheaper. It is possible to save up to 20 per cent by shopping around for alternative airlines flying to the same airport at a similar time.
