A MURDER investigation has been launched after a woman was found dead at a house in Oldham.

Police were called to the home, on Argyll Road in Chadderton, by paramedics at around 12.30pm on Saturday.

When officers arrived they found the body of a woman, believed to be in her 50s.

A 48-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder. He remained in custody for questioning last night.

Neighbours spoke of their shock after police carried out door-to-door enquiries.

One resident fought back tears as he spoke to the M.E.N. He said he was watching TV when officers knocked on his door on Saturday night.

“It’s just very sad,” he said. “You never expect anything like this to happen.”

Another resident, who is observing Ramadan, said he was breaking his fast when he heard police arrive.

He later spoke to an officer, who asked if he had seen anything unusual on Saturday morning. “I knew there was something up,” the resident said. “But the officer didn’t tell me what had happened. “It’s really sad. It’s shocking to hear that something like this has happened on the street.” Forensics officers were seen entering the house yesterday afternoon. A police car was parked outside the home as a PCSO stood guard. Officers are appealing to anyone with information to come forward. Det Insp John Mulvihill, of GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “We are still very much in the early stages of our investigation, but we will do everything in our power to get the answers her family deserve. “My thoughts go out to them at this difficult time and even though we’ve made an arrest, our enquiries continue. “If you were in the area late on Saturday morning and saw anything that could help with our investigation, please get in touch as soon as you can.” Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting incident number 941 of May 25, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
