A WOMAN died after a car crashed into her as she walked along a pavement.

The white Volkswagen Up is understood to have mounted the kerb then gone on to hit fencing and posts.

Police said CCTV was being analysed after the tragedy in Hollinwood Avenue, Chadderton, and that the woman’s family were being supported by trained officers.

The woman, who was her 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene. She has not been named.

The driver of the car involved, a woman aged in her 80s, was taken to hospital to be checked over and later released.

Police said she was fully co-operating with an ongoing investigation.

Sergeant Brian Orr, from Greater Manchester Police’s serious collision investigation unit, issued an appeal for witnesses. He said: “We are doing everything we can to understand exactly what happened and the driver of the car has been fully co-operating with police.”

Police and ambulance crews were called to Tweedale Way in Hollinwood at around 9.45am yesterday. The victim was walking along a pavement near to a car park and the Manchester Evening News printing halls when the collision happened.

Witnesses ran to help and administer first aid before ambulance crews reached the scene. Police said: “Sadly, despite the best efforts of paramedics, the pedestrian – a woman in her 50s – was pronounced dead at the scene.

“CCTV has been recovered and collision investigators continue to take witness accounts.”

Sgt Orr added: “Although we have several witness accounts, we want to gather as much detail as possible and I would urge anyone who saw anything or has dash-cam footage of the incident to please call us,” he said. The death is the second recent fatality in the area.
