THE POSHEST

WAYS TO SPEND YOUR TIME

- By ALICE CACHIA

GOING to the opera is considered the poshest thing you can do in Britain, according to a new poll by YouGov.

Whether it’s the archaic stories, the different languages, or the hefty price of tickets usually starting at around £100 a go opera has a long way to go to shed its elitist image. In fact, more than three-quarters of the population (76 per cent) think spending a night at the opera is a posh cultural activity. It topped the list of 13 activities surveyed. The second-poshest cultural activity according to Brits - is going to the ballet. Some 72 per cent of Brits think the activity is posh. Meanwhile, half of all Brits think going to an art gallery is posh.

Brits view going to the spa as posher than the theatre. Some 38 per cent of Brits said a spa was posh, compared to 36 per cent who said going to the theatre was posh.

In joint sixth place when it comes to the perception of poshness were visiting a museum and going to the casino. Nearly a fifth of people (18 per cent) think going to each is posh.

At the same time, more than one in 10 Brits (12 per cent) think that going for a meal in a restaurant is posh.

But the figure is far lower when it comes to other activities.

The joint second-least posh activities are going to the cinema, seeing a live music gig, or taking a trip to the cinema.

Just two per cent of people ranked each of these cultural activities as posh.

And in joint last place was going to the bingo or going out for a pub meal - with not one person surveyed considering either of the activities as posh. A person’s age impacts on how posh they think an activity is, too. Nine in every 10 young people aged 18-24 said the opera was posh, while just 63 per cent of pensioners said the same. Meanwhile just 22 per cent of pensioners think going to the theatre is posh, compared with 58 per cent of people aged 18-24.
