Take action over sugar

-

IT is predicted that by 2030 there will be 45 per cent of people who are obese.

This will be disastrous for people’s health and it will be shocking news for the NHS.

I am sure that people are now aware of the major illnesses that obesity can cause – such as certain cancers, heart problems and type 2 diabetes.

Also there is now ample evidence that one of the major causes of ill health and obesity is sugar.

There are many ways that people can do to reduce their damaging sugar intake, but there is one very simple way.

Lots of people have around six cups of tea or coffee a day and many have two teaspoonfuls of sugar in them. That is 12 spoonfuls of sugar every day and that is potential very harmful to people’s health.

I would like to see our GPs and local politicians collectively working together to motivate people to cut out sugar in beverages. Of course not every person will do it but I believe when it is highlighted plenty will do it.

It could be pointed out to people that initially it will be hard to do. However if people persevere for a month then there is a great chance they will never have sugar again.

It will be a success provided our health workers and politicians will work together in a concerted way.

Many will dismiss it as being too simplistic but my gut instinct tells me this simple thing will save lives. Harry Singleton, Ashton-underLyne
