Wellens wants to move fast on Latics signings

OLDHAM Athletic boss Richie Wellens says he is keen to get more transfer business done as quickly as possible.

Latics announced details on their first summer signing this week, with Jose Baxter set to return to the club.

Wellens now wants to get more deals done in the coming weeks, whether that be either incoming or outgoing.

“We’ve got a number of players on last year’s contracts so we’ve got to get them out to free up some money to get more players in,” he said.

“We’ve not had one phone call for any of our players, but granted it’s still early. I want to get moving quickly, but we still have clubs who have managers on holiday, so it’s frustrating when you want to get things done as soon as possible. We’ve just got to be patient.

“We offered some players reduced terms. A couple of them we’re waiting to hear back from but one of the players has rejected it, so that’s their prerogative and we move on. In terms of the general shape of the squad we have effective players, so if we can top it off with three or four more coming in that would be good.”

One player staying at Boundary Park is Jamie Stott, but Wellens admits it may be worth him going out on loan.

“I’m happy to keep Jamie Stott and it was important that we keep producing players that come through the academy,” he said. “The thinking with Jamie is that we can keep him and then maybe loan him out to help with his development.”
