United hoping for luck of Champions League draw

-

UNITED could face a tricky Champions League group stage draw next season following Real Madrid’s weekend triumph.

United will be drawn from pot 2, as they were last season, since Premier League champions City have the privilege of being among the seeds.

Uefa has also rewarded the Europa League winners with pot 1 status, so Atletico Madrid are seeded.

As usual, clubs cannot draw teams from their own nation until the quarter-final stage, so United will be kept apart from City, Liverpool and Tottenham.

They could be drawn with either of the Madrid clubs, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Juventus, Paris SaintGermain or Lokomotiv Moscow from pot 1. Barca, Bayern, City, Juve, PSG and Lokomotiv are seeded since they are champions of the top six associations based on the 2017 Uefa coefficients.

United are alongside Borussia Dortmund, Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk, Napoli and Tottenham in pot 2 and will be joined by the two clubs with the highest coefficient once the qualifying round fixtures are finished.

Eighteen clubs have automatically secured Champions League football.

A worst-case scenario for United would arguably be Real Madrid, Monaco and Inter Milan.

The Champions League group stage draw will take place on August 30 in Monaco.
