Massey: Second man is held on double murder

COURT APPEARANCE BY PERSON CHARGED

- By CHRIS SLATER

A SECOND man has been arrested on suspicion of the murders of Paul Massey and his friend John Kinsella.

The 35-year-old is being held in connection with the death of both gangland figures and is in custody for questioning. The families of Mr Massey and Mr Kinsella have both been informed, police said.

It is the latest arrest in a joint operation between Greater Manchester Police and their colleagues in Merseyside.

The latest development came just hours after a man appeared in court charged with the murder of both men.

Armed police were seen on guard outside as Mark Fellows, 37, of Sandy Lane West, in Warrington, made a brief appearance at South Sefton Magistrates Court in Merseyside on Saturday. His case was sent to Liverpool Crown Court where he is next due to appear tomorrow.

Mr Massey, 55, dubbed Salford’s Mr Big, was gunned down outside his home on Manchester Road, Clifton, in July, 2015. His friend John Kinsella, 53, who carried his coffin at his funeral, died after being shot while walking his dog with his partner on a footpath, near to the St Helens Linkway and the M62 motorway in Rainhill, Merseyside, on Saturday, May 5 this year. The gunman, on a pedal bike, also fired at John’s partner as she ran away from the scene.

Of six others who were arrested this week as part of the joint operation, five have since been released under investigation.

Det Chf Insp Carl Jones, of GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “This has been a busy week of operational activity and we made a further arrest in connection with the murders of Paul Massey and John Kinsella.

“That man remains in custody for questioning and both victims’ families have been informed.”

Det Chf Insp Mark Baker, of Merseyside Police’s Investigations team, said: “Detectives from both Merseyside Police and GMP have been carrying out extensive inquiries since the murder of John Kinsella and Paul Massey. This has allowed us to establish a number of positive leads.

“We will continue working with our colleagues in GMP to seek out the truth to bring closure to both victims’ families.”
