THE body of a young man found in a canal in Manchester city centre is thought to be missing teenager Orlando Nyero.

Orlando, 19, from Bolton, disappeared after a night out in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The tragic discovery yesterday afternoon came as the bodies of two other young men were recovered from reservoirs in Gorton and Bolton.

It’s believed both males, also thought to be in their late teens or early 20s, had been swimming before getting into difficulty during separate incidents within hours of each other in Debdale Park and High Rid Reservoir.

The search for Orlando was called off after a body was found in the Rochdale Canal, off Whitworth Street West, at around 2.50pm. It was the same stretch of water where another 19-year-old, Charlie Pope, was found dead in March.

A GMP spokesman said: “There are believed to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. His family are being provided with support from officers at this time.”

Orlando had been out with his brother and two friends on Saturday night. The group returned to the Jurys Inn Hotel on Great Bridgewater Street together but Mr Nyero left the building and wasn’t seen again.

University of Manchester student Mr Pope went missing after a night out with friends in the city centre. His body was found in water behind Rain Bar, off Whitworth Street, on March 2.

Charlie’s father, Nick Pope, has been campaigning for safety measures along the canal ever since. Nick, speaking after the latest tragedy yesterday, said: “It makes me feel more and more annoyed that nothing has been done. They told us nothing could be done because canal deaths are so rare, but here we have two within three months.

“In a modern city in the 21st Century this should not be allowed to continue. But first and foremost I am utterly devastated for this boy’s family.”

A huge search operation was launched in east Manchester yesterday afternoon after a male was seen going into the water at Gorton Reservoir.

Fire engines, a water search unit, police and ambulance vehicles were all called to the scene shortly after 4pm. A police helicopter was also spotted circling the area.

A spokesman for GMP said: “Shortly before 4.10pm on Tuesday 5 June 2018, police and the Fire Service were called to a report of a concern for welfare of a man who was last seen entering a reservoir in Debdale Park in Gorton.”

A fire service spokesman confirmed that a body was later recovered from the water.

Just hours earlier, an emergency operation was launched at High Rid Reservoir in Bolton.

Police, the fire service and paramedics were called to the scene, near Bolton Golf Club off Chorley New Road in the Lostock area of Bolton, at around 1.50pm.

A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service said they had received reports of a person in difficulties in the water. A fire service spokesman confirmed the body of a male was recovered from the water. Manchester council have been contacted for a comment.
