IMAGES giving a sneak preview of a huge new Salford neighbourhood including 500 homes, a new school and shops - have been released.

These CGIs show how the former Castle Irwell student village, formerly a racecourse, could be transformed.

University of Salford bosses have tabled a plan to build up to 500 homes, shops and a school.

They want to build riverside apartments, houses for first-time buyers and family homes at the giant Charlestown site. Land has been earmarked for a school to accommodate the increased numbers of children.

The proposals also include walking and cycle routes through the site, linking to the Irwell Basin wetlands and new ‘village green-style’ open space.

The student village was open for more than 40 years until it closed in 2015.

Many of the buildings were destroyed by a fire in 2016.

A planning document prepared by Day Architectural says the homes would be ‘modern and contemporary, yet appropriate to their surroundings.’

“The existing Salford terraces could be used as inspiration in terms of scale, proportion and materiality to create a truly vernacular new community,” bosses add.

More than 100 retail jobs could be created at the development, according to a separate planning document drawn up by Euan Kellie Property Solutions, which is also consulting on the project.

A ‘small to medium sized food store’ is planned.

The site falls within a ‘low value area’ where no contributions for affordable housing will be sought, the papers add.

“The new development will also help broaden the new housing offer in Salford and contribute towards the provision of a balanced housing mix,” the report reads.

“This is particularly important in offering new housing suitable for families and providing ‘move on’ options for a typically young city centre population who seek an alternative to suburban living. It is also likely to increase the home ownership opportunities available.”
