Suspected cannabis farm is the scene of blaze

DETECTIVES are investigat­ing following a fire involving a suspected cannabis farm in Tameside.

A blaze broke out in a back bedroom of a home on Penrith Avenue in Ashton just before noon on Friday.

Police were called by firefighte­rs after they discovered what was believed to be a cannabis farm, a GMP spokeswoma­n said.

Crews from Hollins, Oldham and Mossley stations spent three hours at the scene putting out A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We were called at 11.30am to a fire involving a back bedroom on Penrith Avenue in Ashton.

“We used two breathing apparatus, one hose reel and a positive pressure ventilatio­n system to put out the fire.

“We were on the scene for about three hours.

“Police also attended. No one was injured.”

A GMP spokeswoma­n said: “Shortly before 11.50am on Friday, June 8, police were called by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service to reports of a suspected cannabis farm at a property on Penrith Avenue in Ashtonunde­r-Lyne.

“Officers attended and enquiries are ongoing. No arrests have been made.”
