AN air cadet instructor who groomed two young teenagers and began sexual relationships with them – leading one victim to selfharm has been jailed for 12 years.

Adam McCarley, 31 met the two girls whilst working as a civilian for the cadets in Greater Manchester.

McCarley, of Foxdenton Lane, in Middleton, initially complemented the girls’ appearances and then offered them lifts home from training.

Sarah Johnston, prosecuting said he formed a relationship with the first victim in 2010 and began messaging her on Facebook and via a webcam.

Despite having a partner and young son, McCarley invited her over to his house where they watched a film and had sex.

They had a secret relationship for two years, in which time he proposed to her, asked her to move in with him and bought her a phone.

Following concerns from the girl’s family, police were contacted but no further action was taken.

Undeterred, and whilst still in a relationship with the first victim, he began messaging the second girl.

They too began a sexual relationship which lasted for seven months until the girl’s parents discovered explicit messages from him on her phone.

Both girls described the longlasting ‘scarring’ effects of McCarley’s actions, with the second victim saying it led her to self-harm.

McCarley’s defence barrister, Rachel Faux told the court: “He regrets that he played a part in the sexual relationships which stole the innocence of these two young girls.”

But McCarley showed no emotion as he was sentenced at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court after pleading guilty to 16 counts of sexual activity with a child and two counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity.

Sentencing, Judge Martin Savill said: “This is a case where in the technical sense consent was given. But the law exists to protect young vulnerable girls against older men like yourself.

“The first offending lasted for two years when you worked as a air cadet instructor and it is that role that allowed you to meet young women.

“Police looked into you and you should have been warned off but this didn’t deter you.

“Your interest in young remained undiminished. girls You began to pursue the next complainant for seven months.

“You groomed young girls for your own sexual interests and you were keen to make contact with other cadets.

“Both young girls have been scarred by their interaction with you and the effect has been devastating.”

McCarley will remain on the sex offenders register for life and was made subject to a sexual harm prevention order for 12 years.
