Tower blocks with 156 flats given green light by planners

-

PROPOSALS to build three ‘sloping’ apartment buildings off Trinity Way in Salford have been approved by planners.

The tower blocks, which will be design to contain 156 flats, were criticised by some residents, who said they ‘wouldn’t want to wake up’ to them.

Developers were initially given permission to build 100 apartments on the land, to the north of Senior Street.

But Urban Splash bosses asked town hall chiefs to amend the proposals following the approval of a 44-storey building on the other side of Trinity Way.

The extension worried some residents, with planning papers citing concerns about the potential loss of sunlight and the design of the homes, which will have distinctive sloping roofs.

Nathan Cornish, director at Urban Splash, said that the structures would only reach 11 storeys at their peak, and would be lower than the proposals for the original building.

The application also includes £150,000 in planning obligations and a ‘claw back’ mechanism, which means that additional cash could be paid to Salford council if the value of the development increases over time.

This mechanism would kick in once 90 percent of the units are ‘disposed of’.

The cash generated from this is proposed to go towards a nearby riverside walkway or affordable housing.
