Eva’s got the energy to help charity – even at 91
RETIRED TEACHER COULD BE MANCHESTER’S OLDEST VOLUNTEER
IS Eva Greenwood Greater Manchester’s oldest volunteer?
The 91-year-old gives up her time to run the coffee bar and clean at the Lighthouse Project in Middleton
The charity runs a variety of educational courses and activity sessions for the community, and is also home to Middleton Foodbank.
Eva originally visited the centre, which is based in Middleton Shopping Centre, to learn how to use smart phones and tablets.
She enjoyed it so much that she decided to stay on as a volunteer and now plays a big role in welcoming people into the centre.
The retired French teacher, who worked at St Dominic Savio School, often runs into her former pupils at the centre – including the centre manager Carl Roach, who she taught as a boy.
Cath Stott, who works closely with Eva, said: “Eva is a big help. She’s really friendly and she’s had a very interesting life so she’s got lots of stories to tell about things that have happened over the years. She does like to keep everyone entertained. She’s just very good and is generally very interested in other people.
“She actually taught a lot of the people that come to the Lighthouse Project. Everybody really looks forward to her coming in. “It’s amazing for her to have that energy at her age. “She is someone who has always been very active. She likes to help people and I think for her she enjoys keeping up the social aspect.” Carl added: “It just goes to show that you are never too old to volunteer or to help others in need.” The Lighthouse Project is celebrating its eighth birthday this weekend. There is an open day event today from 10am to 3pm. The event is free of charge and there will be refreshments on hand.
