Walker tips hat to Pep over education

- By RICHARD FAY

CITY defender Kyle Walker admits his defensive transformation is all down to the education received from Pep Guardiola.

The Premier League title-winning defender starred at right-back for the Blues last season, with his intelligent play down the wing a key contribution.

However, despite his phenomenal performances as a full-back, the 28-year-old is set for a starring role at centre-back during the World Cup with England.

Gareth Southgate believes the defender has what it takes to hold his own in the centre of defence, and will be relying on the former Tottenham man to carry his club form into the national set-up this summer.

And while Walker admits the new defensive role will restrict his own attacking threat, he believes he is capable of helping to establish a strong defensive shape in Russia.

Walker told The Guardian: “You can’t get forward too much,” he said. “I like to get forward but it’s not a one-man team. I’m 28. I’ve played enough football to know when to go.“

And he’s thanked Guardiola for educating him in his new role. “I’ve learned a lot at City. Could I have played in this position a couple of years ago? Probably not.

“I have to take my hat off to Pep Guardiola for what he’s taught me over the last year. It’s been an education,” he said. “I don’t think we’re going to leak too many goals, touch wood. We need to support the midfield, trust in the forwards, and defend and attack as a unit.“
