Sterling and Sane, not to mention Bernardo Silva and – if the deal ever gets over the line – the incoming Riyad Mahrez.

The closing stages of the Liverpool game gave a sneak preview of another of Guardiola’s options, as he replaced Jesus with Sane, and instructed the German ace to tuck inside and leave the touchline to Mendy.

Playing as a second striker alongside Aguero, Sane linked perfectly with Mendy to make it 4-0 and then finished the rout by drifting to the right, cutting inside and curling a left-footer into the top corner.

That told Guardiola that Sane can play inside as well as be the man who gets chalk on his boots and stretches the opposition.

He also experimented with Sterling in that more central position, and Bernardo also played there a couple of times.

Jesus has yet to commit to a new City contract, delaying talks until after the World Cup, when a few good showings could see his value go through the roof – and increase his wage demand accordingly.

Presuming he stays, and there is nothing at present to suggest he won’t, City will have so many attacking options it will be bewildering.

Of course, Guardiola will tailor his team to the opposition, but if he does opt for two strikers, Aguero and Jesus will have competition from Sane, Sterling, Bernardo – and possibly Mahrez.
