Woman hit by tram in city centre

-

A WOMAN was hit by a tram in the city centre yesterday afternoon.

The pedestrian was struck by the vehicle on Market Street at about 4.30pm.

She only suffered minor injuries and was checked over by paramedics at the scene, officers said.

Police said: “We were called to Market Street to reports of a collision between a tram and a pedestrian on Market Street.

“Her injuries are not believed to be serious. She was assessed at the scene.”

A TfGM spokeswoman said: “Due to a collision between a tram and pedestrian at the junction between the Piccadilly Gardens and Market Street Metrolink stops, services were diverted from 4.30pm to 4.50pm.

“Altrincham to Piccadilly services turned at Exchange Square, Ashton to Piccadilly, and Eccles to Cornbrook during this time.

“The police and paramedics were called and we understand the woman was treated for minor injuries.”

There were severe delays on both the Ashton and Eccles via Media City line following the incident.

A statement on the TfGM website said: “Due to an earlier incident we are currently experiencing severe delays on the Ashton-under-Lyne line.

“Services travelling in both directions between Piccadilly and Ashton-under-Lyne are affected. This was due to an earlier medical emergency at Piccadilly Gardens.”
