Mum knifed girlfriend after playful slap on pal

- By ASHLIE BLAKEY

A mum-of-two stabbed her girlfriend after she ‘playfully’ smacked a friend’s bottom during a pub crawl.

Paula Goodwin, 40, knifed her partner twice in the legs after sinking her teeth into her thigh.

She flew into a rage after ‘taking offence’ to her girlfriend, who she has now broken up with, slapping a pal’s behind.

Goodwin’s ex, who she has not spoken to since the incident, is deaf, Minshull Street Crown Court was told.

She had her hearing aid pulled out during the attack, in which she was also punched in the face and grabbed by the hair.

Goodwin’s girlfriend managed to crawl onto the street outside the couple’s former home in Middleton.

Prosecuting, Nigel Booth said the victim thought she was going to die as she lay bleeding on the pavement.

She was taken to hospital after a neighbour heard her screams and called an ambulance

The woman was left with multiple injuries, including a bite wound to her left thigh, a stab wound to the calf and bruises on her face and arms.

The weapon was found to be an 18 inch-long kitchen knife.

Goodwin, who has two children, admitted wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and was jailed for two years.

The court heard the couple had been together for 15 months.

The attack happened on May 1 last year after the couple went out with friends.

In mitigation, defence counsel Jason Macadam said his client had been taking medication due to her bipolar disorder.

“Miss Goodwin has been a victim of domestic violence herself - her previous partner having been incarcerated for violence he imposed on her,” he added.

“But she has no recollection of violence that occurred that night.

“She had been taking alcohol that day mixed with medication. The fact is she doesn’t seek to blame anyone else but herself. “This is a big wake up call for her.” Sentencing, Judge Maurice Greene told Goodwin: “This was a serious case of domestic violence against your then partner.

“She suffered serious injuries and still has residual problems.

“She had some vulnerability because of her deafness. You also used in effect two weapons - your teeth and a knife.”

Goodwin was also ordered to abide by a restraining order preventing her from making any contact with the victim or her family.
