Stand by bee... Liam adds his mark to Manc artwork

- By EMILY HEWARD

LIAM Gallagher has been a busy bee this weekend, with a storming Sunday night set at Manchester’s Parklife festival – or Parkalife, as he renamed it in his own honour.

The former Oasis frontman also took the time to put the finishing touches to one of the sculptures for Manchester’s Bee in the City trail before his performance.

Liam’s bee features the Rock ‘n’ Roll logo he uses on stage, with sound waves scrawled around it in black marker, which he completed backstage at the Heaton Park festival.

Parklife boss Sacha Lord told the M.E.N: “When we were first approached to try and make this happen it seemed quite a steep hurdle.

“However, Liam bought into the idea straight away and even approved the use of his Rock ‘n’ Roll logo, when he knew the cause.

“All round top fella, top Manc, and we were happy to support.”

Liam’s creation is among 100 giant bee sculptures that will swarm the city this summer for visitors to admire.

Each fibreglass bee stands 1.8m high and will feature a unique design created by a different artist. It will join Manchester-themed designs including Hilda Bugden, I Wanna Bee Adored and Hac-BeeEnda on the public art trail, which runs from July 23 to September 23. Hac-Bee-Enda, Sir Matt Buzz-Bee and Hilda Bugden – giant bee sculpture designs unveiled for Bee in the City event The sculptures will be installed at some of the city’s biggest landmarks for visitors to explore this summer. The official trail map has yet to be revealed but organisers say it will lead people to ‘the honeypots of the city’ as well as some lesser-explored gems. The event is organised by Wild in Art – the team behind 2004’s Cow Parade trail – in partnership with the council and will raise money for the Lord Mayor’s We Love Manchester charity. Sally-Ann Wilkinson, director of Wild in Art, said: ‘It’s incredibly exciting that Liam Gallagher is part of Bee in the City, in true rock ‘n’ roll star style adding the finishing touches to his bee back stage at Manchester’s Parklife (or Parkalife, I should say!). “It’s brilliant to have the Rock ‘n’ Roll Bee as part of the trail as he’s such a Manchester legend.”
