‘MORONIC’ vandals rampaged through Heywood town centre and smashed up a string of bus stops.

The glass panels in five bus stops along Church Street and Market Street were shattered overnight.

A cash machine at Lloyds was also damaged.

A clean-up operation launched to remove the glass.

Residents and business owners have reacted with fury to the ‘mindless’ vandalism, which came just ten days before the town was due to was host one of its biggest annual events – the 1940s Day.

John Heyworth, of Blue Rose News on Taylor Street, said: “At a time when local businesses and the council are doing everything to improve the look and feel of the town ahead of the 1940s weekend it’s depressing to see such mindless vandalism.

“Someone knows who is responsible for this moronic act, I hope they do the right thing and report them. But I won’t hold my breath on that.”

Transport for Greater Manchester confirmed that the bus stops were being secured and will be reglazed by the end of the week.

Heywood councillor Peter Rush described the crime as ‘disgusting and disappointing’ and says people in the town are extremely angry.

He said: “I think it’s absolutely appalling. To think about just themselves and to cause this woeful damage. It doesn’t give credit to our town.”
