You have to accept majority on Brexit

-

I AM writing with regard to the letter from Rev Fr Patrick Davies (and his crystal ball) over Brexit, (Some sanity needed – now: M.E.N. Viewpoints, June 13).

He states it is a non-binding referendum. According to who? Because it was a vote for leave? MPs voted to sanction a referendum so what was the point? A slim majority? Well, if you win 1-0 it’s still three points, and anyway in all elections you have to accept it.

He says none of us voted for a number of things he predicts will happen. Well who is us? Those who could not be bothered to vote? Those who voted remain? Those who voted to leave? Those who voted in total?

He stated that lies were told by the Leave campaign. Well, if you listened to the doomsayers from the Remain camp Armageddon was just around the corner and proved false.

I don’t know how old he is but as for lies they were certainly put out in 1975 when we voted for a common market/trading agreement (and I did) and not for what has now become the undemocratic money pit monolith the EU is with unelected people at the helm.

When he states about ‘we did not vote for this, that and the other’ I can also draw his attention to previous votes in elections where ’we’ did not vote for Gordon Brown to raid pension funds and cripple them nor did ‘we’ vote for Tony Blair to take us into war in Iraq with all its tragic consequences.

I could add more but the point of a democratic system is that you accept the majority have voted whichever way it goes, and does he seriously think that more than 17 million people are all xenophobic, bigoted and racist?
