30 homes plan for former office block

DEVELOPERS have submitted plans to convert an office block just north of the city centre into 30 homes.

Globe House is located on Southall Street opposite Strangeways prison.

Developers want to install 30 flats on the site, alongside a gym and a pool.

The documents sent to Manchester council show plans to provide 10 extra car parking spaces, as well as retaining the existing 14 bays.

The leisure facilities in the basement would not be for the general public’s use – only for residents. That’s to prevent an ‘over intensive use of the building’ and excessive on-street parking demand in the locality, in the interests of highway safety, according to documents available on the planning portal. The building is a four-storey Victorian structure.

Documents sent to the council’s planning department say that the additional traffic impact would be negligible, especially considering the ‘former use’ of the building – as offices.

An existing lift in the building would be refurbished so that it’s ‘sufficient for residential use,’ while the existing ‘fabric’ of the building is to be retained.

A document from the end of last year that’s attached to the plans says that the council is ‘satisfied that this development minimises the impact on the local highway network and there are no known transport, noise impact, contamination or flood risks at the site.’

The planning application was filed with Manchester council’s planning department on June 5, according to documents on the site.
