Angel’s head start before tour of US
ANGEL Gomes is already training for the new season – nearly a month before United’s first-team squad fly out for their summer tour of the US.
The 17-year-old is rated one of the club’s hottest prospects and has made two appearances under Jose Mourinho after training with the first team on a number of occasions.
Mourinho affectionately referred to the youngster as ‘greedy Gomes!’ back in January after he nearly capped a late cameo at Yeovil with a goal following a solo run at the death.
And Gomes is wasting no time in trying to catch his manager’s eye. Posting a short video on his Twitter page, captioned ‘work mode’, the midfielder was put through his paces on holiday with a series of sprints on the beach.
July 15, the date when United’s first-team squad fly out for their pre-season tour of the US, will surely be pencilled in Gomes’ diary.
United have a dozen players at the World Cup, including prospective new signing Fred, and the vast majority will fancy their chances of making it to the quarter-finals in Russia on July 6/7.
As was the case for the summer tour in 2016, that is likely to be the cutoff point this summer for United’s internationals and they will then fly out at a later date after a welldeserved holiday.
That leaves potential places up for grabs in United’s 25-man touring party and Mourinho has already hinted he will turn to the club’s academy.
