A MURDER investigation has been launched after a man died following a ‘brutal attack’ in south Manchester.

Detectives were called to a house on Heysham Avenue in Withington on Saturday night after the 28-yearold was found by paramedics.

He was taken to hospital but later died.

It is thought the man was attacked some time earlier on Saturday and police say they are now ‘working to establish exactly where this happened’ and ‘piece together the hours leading up to his death.’

Yesterday evening, a police officer stood guard as a forensics team collected evidence from inside the property.

Neighbours say the victim collapsed on the doorstep of the house and told how ambulance crews fought desperately to save him. One resident, who asked not to be named, described the victim as a ‘nice lad’ who was well-liked.

Floral tributes and heart-warming letters to the victim have also been left at the scene, placed along the front fence of the quiet cul-de-sac home.

Det Insp Wes Knights, from Greater Manchester Police’s Major Incident Team, said the victim’s family were ‘understandably beside themselves.’

He added: “The investigation is in its very early stages but from enquiries so far we believe this man was subjected to a brutal attack at some point on Saturday.

“The family is understandably beside themselves and we are doing everything we can to find out exactly what happened to him and those who are responsible for his death.

“Specially trained officers continue to offer their support to them, while a team of detectives and forensic officers are trawling through potential evidence and information that can help us piece together the hours leading up to his death.

“There will be a police presence on Heysham Avenue and I would urge anyone who knows anything to please contact us so we can give this man’s family the answers they deserve.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 8797 quoting incident number 350 of June 16, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 11.
