Chance to salute forces

PUBLIC CAN SHOW APPRECIATI­ON FOR SERVING PERSONNEL AND VETERANS

THOUSANDS of people, of all ages, are set to show their appreciati­on and support for the Armed Forces and veterans with a host of fun activities in the city centre on Saturday, June 30.

Service personnel and their families from across the city have been invited to Manchester’s Armed Forces Day event for a chance to show their support for the Armed Forces community.

This year’s celebratio­n – 100 years since the end of the First World War – will take place at St Peter’s Square with activities running from 11am to 4pm.

The Lancashire Artillery Band will start the celebratio­ns followed by a march past at 11.30am, complete with a ceremonial firing of guns.

Visitors to the event will be able to immerse themselves in military taster activities and will be able to have a go at sitting in an RAF Jet Provost cockpit, wear real military kit, and try their hand at radio communicat­ions.

Informatio­n about military and veteran support services will be available and there will be a host of free familyfrie­ndly activities taking place, including a climbing wall and face-painting.

There’s also the chance to enjoy some delicious food and drink.

Manchester Central Library - which features an extensive military archive – will be open throughout the event.

On production of an Armed Forces ID card or Veterans Badge and a photo ID, Armed Forces personnel and veterans can enjoy a 20 per cent discount in the Central Library cafe. Further special offers are available for Armed Forces personnel and veterans, with details on the council’s website.

Lord Mayor of Manchester, Coun June Hitchen, said: “Armed Forces Day allows us to pay tribute to the courage and experience of current members and veterans of the Armed Forces. It’s a great day out for all the family and a fantastic opportunit­y to show your appreciati­on.”
