Robson: United need new goalscorer

UNITED need to buy another proven goalscorer this summer, according to club legend Bryan Robson.

Jose Mourinho has already landed two of his summer transfer targets sealing deals for Brazilian midfielder Fred and former Porto right-back Diogo Dalot.

The United manager said he would not look to strengthen his attacking line in the current window but Robson believes it could help to bridge the gap between United and runaway league winners City.

“I think you always need to try and improve,” Robson, pictured right, told MEN Sport .

“Maybe needs another midfielder who can score goals or another striker wouldn’t go amiss.

“But in fairness, the manager hasn’t let too many players go at this moment in time and he’s already signed two new players so that should enhance the squad.

“I don’t think we’ve got too far to go to challenge Manchester City. They had an outstanding season last season and I don’t think we’re as far behind them as many people think.”

Mourinho’s style of play was criticised by many last season and, despite needing to change things to catch City next season, United’s former captain can’t see Mourinho changing his methods. “I think the manager has always got in his mind that he is going to play 4-3-3,” Robson explained.

“That’s what has given him success throughout his career so I can’t see him changing away from that. But, I think what he will do, if he hasn’t done it already by signing the likes of Fred, is he will try and enhance the team and make them better for next season’s challenge.”

Robson was speaking at a Manchester United Foundation launch event as they celebrated their partnership with Manchester Enterprise Academy Central.
