...now United look to bring in Willian

- By JAMES ROBSON

UNITED are increasingly encouraged they will win the race for Willian as Chelsea look to balance the books.

Jose Mourinho has reignited his interest in the Brazil international after missing out on him last summer.

It was felt Chelsea would be reluctant to sell to a direct rival particularly after losing Nemanja Matic to United 12 months ago – but Roman Abramovich’s decision to reduce his spending at Stamford Bridge means the Londoners are likely to sell to boost their transfer funds.

It is believed Abramovich will make just £60m available in a summer in which his side are already playing catch up.

Eden Hazard would command the biggest fee, but Willian could bring in around £50m if Chelsea choose to cash in.

Mourinho wants to add to his attack and is determined to address the right wing.

Gareth Bale is the dream option, but Willian represents a much cheaper solution at a time when United are looking strengthen in defence, midfield and up front in their bid to catch up with City.

Willian’s future has been put on hold while Chelsea clear up their managerial situation.

Antonio Conte is expected to depart, with Maurizio Sarri favourite to replace him.

Whoever is in charge, Chelsea will require significant additions after falling out of the top four last season and missing out on Champions League qualification.
