Battle to re-open road by rush hour

ONE of the busiest motorway roundabouts in the region was being resurfaced after a major crash involving a lorry carrying fairground ride.

The work at Simister Island was expected to be completed before today’s morning rushhour. The collision happened on the westbound M62 approaching junction 18 at Simster, the interchange with the M60, M66 and M62 motorways, and involved a huge fairground lorry.

Emergency services were scrambled to the scene at around 2pm yesterday and found fuel had spilled out onto the carriageways.

Three lanes were closed at first, although currently just one lane remains open. Dramatic photos taken by motorway police and published on Twitter show the extent of the damage at the scene.

Highways England however tweeted to confirm part of the carriageway would have to be resurfaced.

No timescales revealed.

In a tweet last night, Highways England said: “On the M62 at J18 near Simister, we’ll need to resurface part of the roundabout tonight, following the earlier collision which spilt a load of fuel onto the carriageway. Currently, one lane still remains open on the roundabout.”

It’s not known whether there were any injuries or if any other vehicles were involved. The M.E.N. has attempted to contact Greater Manchester Police. had been
