‘Spectacular’ mistake leaves car on tram tracks

-

A CAR ended up stuck on the tram tracks at Victoria Station early on Saturday morning.

GMP Traffic tweeted a picture of the crumpled up blue Citroën at the entrance of the station at 6am.

The force described the error as ‘more spectacular than the average vehicle onto the tracks incident’, due to the severity of the damage to the car.

Tram services in and out of the station were affected while police recovered the vehicle. The car was removed by 7am.

The driver was in police custody following the incident, police said.

The tweet said: “More spectacular than the average ‘vehicle on to the tracks’ incident at Victoria this morning.

“Having an effect on @MCRMetrolink service while we attempt recovery. “Driver to custody.” Then at 7am, they posted an update saying: “Vehicle now recovered and @MCRMetrolink engineers are en route to inspect the tracks, hopefully allowing them to open the line again soon.”

A Metrolink spokeswoman said: “A car was driven onto the tracks at Victoria just before 6am.

“This blocked the second city crossing (towards Exchange Square) so services between Rochdale and East Didsbury ran via Market Street.

“The car was recovered and tracks inspected before services were allowed to start running through from 7.07am.”
