THIS is the shocking image which almost landed a roofer a prison sentence.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said that roofer Michael Anthony Roden put his life and the life of his employee at risk to save money.

They were carrying out roof replacement work at Wheildons Butchers in Didsbury on November 7 last year.

Mr Roden, who trades as M&R Roofing and Onyx Roofing, failed to use any scaffolding or protection to prevent them falling from the roof.

He also did not compulsory employers’ insurance.

A concerned member of the public took the picture and sent it to the HSE. have liability

Their probe revealed Roden had previously been served with two prohibition notices on two separate occasions, after he was found to be working at height with no suitable edge protection.

The HSE said that in working without scaffolding and further safety measures Roden put himself and his employee at risk of a fall from height.

Members of the public were also at risk from any materials which fell from the building, investigators said.

Roden, 59, of Ribble Walk, Droylsden, pleaded guilty to health and safety offences at Manchester magistrates court. He was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for two years, and must complete 240 hours of unpaid work. He must also pay costs of £4,600. Speaking after the hearing, HSE inspector Matt Greenly said: “This incident could so easily have been avoided by simply having the correct control measures and safe working practices in place. “Mr Roden chose to save money by not having scaffolding and in doing so put his life at risk as well as the lives of his employee and visitors to the butcher’s shop. “Companies should be aware that HSE will not hesitate to take appropriate enforcement action against those that fall below the required standards.” Matt Greenly, HSE inspector
