Residents praised for recycling
TRAFFORD residents are being congratulated after the borough was ranked in the top 10 for recycling and composting rates.
The most recent annual figures published by WasteDataFlow show the borough recycled or re-purposed 61.3pc in 2016/17 – almost 20pc above the national average.
Data show that almost 600,000 tonnes of waste have been collected and recycled in Trafford – nearly 330kg of waste per household.
The ranking puts the authority in the top 10 nationally, with neighbouring Stockport placed 17th with a 59pc recycle rate.
However, Manchester council has the region’s worst rating for the year, which stands at just 36pc – the authority is placed 265th out of 350 local authorities in England.
Council leader Andrew Western said: “Trafford is proud to be leading the way for recycling in Greater Manchester.
“We are committed to working with residents to further increase recycling rates as there is always more to be done. We provide every opportunity for local people to recycle as much as possible; helping to protect essential services by reducing the amount of money the council spends on waste disposal.
“Through education, advice and environmental initiatives we are continuing to work with residents, highlighting the importance and benefits of recycling.”
