Heatwave looks set to continue as Met Office warns rain is still some way off

-

FORECASTERS have issued an amber health warning as this weekend looks set to be a scorcher.

Temperatures could reach 33C in some parts of the UK, particularly in western England, the Met Office said.

They highest temperatures are likely to occur on Sunday, which will be dry and fine with light winds, but the warning is in place from Saturday until 9am Monday.

As part of the alert Public Health England is urging people to look after themselves and others who may be at risk.

The Met Office warning said: “Stay out of the sun. Keep your home as cool as possible – shading windows and shutting them during the day may help.

“Open them when it is cooler at night. Keep drinking fluids.

“If there’s anybody you know, for example an older person living on their own, who might be at special risk, make sure they know what to do.”

An amber warning is the second highest on the scale, with a red warning the next level up from this current warning.

It has been escalated from the yellow alert issued last week and is in place until 9am on Monday morning.

The UK heatwave shows no signs of going anywhere, with forecasters saying there will not be any significant rain for quite some time.

There could be some light drizzle on Monday which will pass quickly, but any significant downpours appear to be a long way off.

Grahame Madge, spokesman for the Met Office, said: “There is nothing meaningful in the forecast in the way of rain for the next couple of days.

“It is possible we could see some light rain on Monday, but it is nothing substantial and just isolated showers.

“In terms of weather conditions we have got another period of high pressure that will bring some warm temperatures again.”
