Good news for Devils despite injury woes

- By TOM BRAMWELL

SALFORD travel to Hull KR tomorrow without Jack Littlejohn and Kris Welham following the injuries they picked up against Warrington last week – but there are some encouraging additions to the squad.

Tyrone McCarthy has recovered from the knock that has kept him out since last month’s win over Widnes, while Josh Jones is in line to make only his second Red Devils appearance since April.

Ed Chamberlain is included in Ian Watson’s 19-man squad and could make his first start in a Salford shirt.

His debut came as a late substitute against his former employers, the Vikings. Littlejohn’s injury – a ruptured bicep that is expected to rule him out for the remainder of the season – means that Watson will again be required to test out a new option at fullback.

With Niall Evalds continuing to recover from a broken leg, Littlejohn had been asked to fill the unconventional role and was starting to show promise in the number one jersey, scoring two tries against the Wolves before being forced off with the injury. The likes of Greg Johnson, Jake Bibby and Chamberlain are among the likeliest candidates to be asked to deputise at the back.

Craig Kopczak remains on the sidelines with a quadricep injury, but Levy Nzoungou has returned following his loan spell at Swinton Lions and goes straight into the squad. If selected, he will be making only his second Red Devils appearance. Ex-Salford captain Tommy Lee is included in the Hull KR squad, but former winger Justin Carney misses out because of a broken hand.

SALFORD: Johnson, Sa’u, Lui, L. Tomkins, Jones, Flanagan, Tasi, Lannon, McCarthy, Nakubuwai, Wood, Olpherts, Mossop, Bibby, Nzoungou, Murray, Shorrocks, Chamberlain, Burke
